The High Court has issued a ruling asking why Tk10 crore in compensation should not be awarded to the family of Abrar Fahad, the Buet student who was brutally tortured and killed by Chhatra League activists.
The ruling was issued by a High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Muhammad Mahbub ul Islam after hearing a writ petition on the matter.
Assistant Attorney General Mujahidul Islam Shaheen represented the state in court.
On the night of October 6, 2019, Abrar Fahad was beaten to death at Buet’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall. His father, Barkat Ullah, filed a murder case at Chawkbazar police station the following day, accusing 19 individuals.
After an investigation lasting 37 days, Inspector Md Wahiduzzaman submitted the charge sheet on November 13, 2019.
Subsequently, on December 8, 2021, Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 sentenced 20 individuals to death and handed life sentences to five others in connection with Abrar Fahad’s murder.
The verdict was delivered by Judge Abu Zafar Md Kamruzzaman.
