High Court has accepted an appeal for re-investigation against the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI)'s report that exonerated Bashundhara Group's Managing Director Sayem Sobhan Anvir in the murder case of college student Munia.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Shahidul Karim and Justice Md Atabullah passed the order.
Barrister M Sarwar Hossain stood for the petitioner.
On April 26, 2021, police recovered the hanging body of college student Munia from a flat in Gulshan owned by Ibrahim Ahmed Ripon. A diary in the flat contained writings about Munia's relationship with Sayem Sobhan Anvir, including promises of marriage and physical relationships.
At that time, a case was filed against Anvir at Gulshan police station for abetting Munia's suicide, but he was later exonerated when Gulshan police submitted a final report. The court accepted this report.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Rajesh Chowdhury dismissed a no-confidence petition filed by Munia's family against the police report.
Later, Munia's sister Nusrat Jahan Tania filed a case at the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-8, accusing Sayem Sobhan Anvir of raping and then strangling Munia to death.
The PBI's Dhaka Metro South Organized Crime division took charge of the investigation, but the investigation report later exonerated Anvir. The complainant disagreed, and the court dismissed the appeal.
The appeal for re-investigation against this order and investigation report was later filed in the High Court.
