Supreme Court sets date for hearing of petition challenging Dr Yunus’s indictment in ACC case

The hearing for a leave-to-appeal petition filed by Nobel laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus and six other officials of Grameen Telecom against the High Court's decision to reject their application to cancel proceedings under the Money Laundering Prevention Act has been set for September 2.

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, set the date for the hearing on Thursday.

Senior lawyer Abdullah-Al-Mamun represented Dr Yunus, while Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman appeared for the state.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) was represented by lawyer AKM Fazlul Haque.

Alongside Dr Yunus, the other six appellants are Grameen Telecom's Managing Director Nazmul Islam, directors Ashraful Hasan, Naznin Sultana, Shahjahan, Noorjahan Begum, and SM Hazzatul Islam Latifi.

The case was filed by ACC Deputy Director Gulshan Anwar Pradhan on May 30, 2023.

The investigation report alleges that the accused embezzled Tk25.22 crore and engaged in illegal fund transfers, which constitute a crime under the Money Laundering Prevention Act.

On June 12, Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 framed charges against Dr Yunus and 14 others. The court set July 15 for evidence collection.

Dr Yunus and the seven top officials of Grameen Telecom later challenged the charge framing order by filing a petition with the High Court to cancel the case proceedings.

On July 24, a High Court bench comprising Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Kazi Ebadul Haque rejected the petition and directed Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 to complete the trial within a year.
