A Dhaka court has granted law enforcement five days to question Salman F Rahman and Anisul Huq in custody, the duo’s fourth time on remand, in a case filed over the shooting death of a youth in Badda during the recent student movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nurul Huda Chowdhury granted the remand order in the presence of the accused on Thursday.
Additionally, the court granted a five-day remand for former lawmaker Md Sadek Khan and former senior army officer Ziaul Ahsan in a case lodged over the killing of garment worker Rubel in the capital’s Adabar.
After their previous remand ended, Salman F Rahman, advisor to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina; Anisul Huq, former law minister; Sadeq Khan, former MP for Dhaka-13; and Ziaul Ahsan, former director general of the National Telecommunication Monitoring Centre (NTMC), were brought to court at 7am, where the police requested a 10-day remand for each.
During the remand hearing, Anisul told the court that both Salman and he had supported the quota reform movement. “We are innocent, unaware of the incident. We seek justice from the court."
On August 13, based on secret information, the police arrested Salman and Anisul in the Sadarghat area of the capital while they were attempting to flee the country by water.
The next day, a Dhaka court granted a 10-day remand for them in a murder case filed with New Market police station.
On August 24, they were placed on another 10-day remand (five days in each case) in two separate murder cases filed with Lalbagh and New Market police stations.
Sadek was arrested on August 24 in the Nakhalpara area of the capital.
The following day, a court granted a four-day remand for him in a murder case filed with Mohammadpur police station.
Ziaul was arrested late on August 15 in the Khilkhet area of Dhaka.
The next day, a court granted an eight-day remand for him in a case filed with New Market police station.
Later, on August 24, the court ordered an additional 10-day remand, five days each in two separate murder cases filed with Lalbagh and New Market police stations.
