A Dhaka court on Monday placed Awami League publicity and publications secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, former head of news at Ekattor Television Shakil Ahmed and its principal correspondent Farzana Rupa on different terms of remand in the case over the death of a garment worker Rubel during the anti—iscrimination student movement.
The court granted a 7-day remand to Abdus Sobhan Golap while 5-day remand to Shakil and Rupa.
Metropolitan Magistrate Mosharraf Hossain of Dhaka issued the remand order following a hearing.
Earlier, the investigation officer of the case, Inspector Mintoo Chandra Banik of Adabor police station, filed a 10-day remand petition for each of the three accused in court.
On August 22, the court granted a 4-day remand for Rupa and Shakil in a separate case related to the murder of Fazlul Karim in Uttara East police station.
According to the case statement, during the anti-discrimination student movement on August 5, Rubel and hundreds of students along with general people held a protest march around 11am in the Ring Road area under Adabor police station.
During the protest, police and leaders and activists of various Awami League affiliated groups, including the Chhatra League, Jubo League and other affiliated organization of Awami League, opened fire towards the protesters. Rubel was shot and was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital.
Rubel’s father, Rafiqul Islam, filed the case with Adabor Police Station on August 22.
The main accused in the case is former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
Other accused include Sheikh Hasina’s sister Sheikh Rehana, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, actor Ferdous, and Barrister Syedul Haque Suman.
On August 21, Shakil and Rupa were detained by immigration officials at Dhaka's Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport while attempting to leave the country and were later handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Meanwhile, Abdus Sobhan Golap was arrested on August 15 from West Nakhalpara in Dhaka.
