A Chittagong court has granted bail to 16 HSC examinees who were arrested in Chittagong in connection with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
The Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrates Md Oli Ullah and Chief Judicial Magistrate Kazi Mohammad Shahidul Islam granted bail in separate orders on Friday evening,
Chittagong District Public Prosecutor (PP) Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury told the media.
The students granted bail are identified as Rezaul Azim, Monirul Islam Atiq, Abdullah Mohammad Tahid, Abdul Jabbar, Israful Akhtar, Moin Uddin, Abdullah bin Ayyub, Aziz Ullah, Rashedul Islam, Rabiul Hasnat Sourav, Ajay Chowdhury, Rakibul Alam Asif, Tabher Shah Fahim, Faisal Mahmud Fahim, Aziz Ullah, and Abu Raihan.
Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury said: “Three HSC examinees were arrested from Banshkhali, Raojan, and Lohagara upazilla in Chittagong district in a sabotage case related to the quota reform movement. After hearing the special petition, the court granted bail to the three candidates on a bond of Tk 2,000.”
He added: "If HSC examinees are arrested in any case in Chittagong during the quota reform movement, I urge their families to contact us. We will work to secure bail for their children."
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Prosecution) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, Md Mofiz Uddin, said: “The court granted bail to 13 HSC examinees arrested in various vandalizm cases in the city, based on a special application.”
Earlier, the Ministry of Home Affairs announced that the government would provide legal assistance to HSC examinees detained in recent violent incidents, provided they have no serious complaints against them.
On Thursday night, the notification was issued which says the government will provide legal assistance to candidates applying for bail with their exam admit card and relevant documents.
