Top court extends status quo on Mironjilla Colony eviction

The Supreme Court's Appellate Division has extended its order from Wednesday directing the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) to maintain the status quo on eviction proceedings at Mironjilla Colony in Dhaka's Bangshal area, inhabited by members of the Harijan community, until further notice.

The court on Thursday also instructed the High Court to resolve within two months a writ petition challenging the eviction move.

A five-member bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan, issued the order after hearing a petition filed by the DSCC seeking a stay on a High Court order. The High Court had issued a one-month status quo on eviction proceedings on June 13 and directed the DSCC to arrange accommodation for the affected residents.

Harijan community members, who came here from India during the British rule, have been living in this colony for many years. Currently, around 4,000 people reside in Mironjilla Colony.

The DSCC wants to build a modern kitchen market in a part of this colony.
