Three assistant attorneys general have been relieved of their posts in the aftermath of violence during the vote counting of the recently concluded Supreme Court Bar Association election.
The announcement came through a notification signed by Solicitor Runa Nahid Akhtar of the Ministry of Law, under the president's directive, on Monday.
The notification said the appointments of assistant attorneys general Advocate Md Zakir Hossain, Advocate Kazi Bashir Ahmed and Advocate Shama Akhtar, given under the ministry's orders dated 12/06/2017 (09/Solicitor/2009-46), 19/10/2017 (09/Solicitor/2009-86) and 07/07/2019 (09/Solicitor/2009-63) respectively, have been revoked.
The order is to be effective immediately.
Following the election held from Wednesday to Thursday, violence broke out during the vote count starting Thursday night. The clash occurred between supporters of independent candidates for the secretary position, Advocate Nahid Sultana Juthi, and members of the election management sub-committee.
Later, a case was filed with Shahbagh police station. Among those accused in the case are Advocate Nahid Sultana Juthi and Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, the secretary candidate from the BNP panel, along with 20 others.
Assistant Attorney General Saifur Rahman Chowdhury Saif, who was injured in the violence on Friday night, filed a case alleging an attempt on his life. Afterwards, the police arrested five lawyers, including the BNP's Barrister Osman Chowdhury and later, Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal.
The election was overseen by a seven-member committee led by senior lawyer Advocate Abul Khaier, with around 150 lawyers assisting the election management sub-committee, including notable members Advocate Md Iqbal Karim and Deputy Attorney General Asaduzzaman Monir.
