Police have submitted the charge sheet in the murder case of labour leader Shahidul Islam, eight months after he was killed over a dispute between local leaders and activists of Bangladesh Garment Workers Trade Union and Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation.
The charge sheet was submitted to a Gazipur court online on Saturday, accusing 14 people.
In the charge sheet, police named one Amir Hossain and the administrative manager of Prince Jacquard Sweater Limited.
Police mentioned in the charge sheet that Shahidul was killed following the orders of these two.
Imran Ahmed, additional superintendent of Gazipur industrial police and head of the investigation committee of the case, confirmed the matter.
The other accused are Mazharul Islam, 35, Akash Ahmed alias Babul, 43, Rasel Mondal, 35, Raitul Islam alias Ratul, 19, Sohel Rana, 23, Julhas Ali, 23, Sohel Hasan Sohag, 26, Shahinul Islam, 21, Shakil Molla, 23, Amir Hossain, 40, Halim Mia, 42, Rafiqul Islam, 46, Jewel Mia, 22, and Abu Saleh, 39.
Shahidul Islam, the president of the Gazipur district branch of Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation, lost his life on June 25 last year, in front of the Prince Jacquard Sweater Limited factory in Tongi, Gazipur.
He was attacked by assailants while working to secure overdue wages for labourers.
Following the incident, Kalpana Akhter, the central president of Bangladesh Garments and Industrial Workers Federation, lodged a case against six named individuals and seven unidentified persons at Tongi West police station on June 26.
Initially, the Tongi West police took charge of the investigation. However, on July 6, the case was handed over to the Gazipur district industrial police for further inquiry.
Imran Ahmed, additional superintendent of police for Gazipur Industrial Police, stated: "Based on the evidence gathered during the investigation, we had already confirmed the impact on Shahidul. However, we awaited the post-mortem findings to ascertain the exact cause of death. Now, it's clear that he (Shahidul) succumbed to his injuries. We're looking into whether there was any motive behind Shahidul's attack and murder."
He also revealed that 10 suspects have been apprehended thus far in connection with Shahidul's murder.
Among them, five are directly implicated in the case, while the remaining five were detained based on confessions provided by the primary suspects.
The investigation is ongoing, with efforts to locate the instigator behind the attack, the police officer added.
