SAGAR-RUNI MURDER

Law Minister: If needed, 50 years should be allowed to end probe

Responding to a question as to why the probe into journalist couple Sagar-Runi murders has not finished in 12 years, Law Minister Anisul Huq on Thursday said an investigation may linger when it comes to identifying the real culprit.

“The investigators should be given as much time as possible until their job is properly done. It will not be right to force the police to finish the probe and press charges,” he said.

“If needed (to complete the probe), more time should be allowed. Even if it needs another 50 years, the time should be allowed,” Anisul Huq told reporters at the Secretariat in Dhaka.

On January 23, the probe report submission date in the case filed over the 2012 assassinations of Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi was deferred for the 105th time. A Dhaka court set February 27 for the submission of the report.

Sagar, a news editor at the private TV channel Maasranga and a former DW journalist, and his wife, Runi, a senior reporter at ATN Bangla, were killed on February 11, 2012, in their rented flat in the capital's West Razabazar area.
