Regent Group Chairman Shahed acquitted in arms case

The High Court on Thursday acquitted Regent Group Chairman and Regent Hospital owner Mohammad Shahed Karim in an arms case.

A High Court bench comprising Justice Ashish Ranjan Das and Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan passed the order on Thursday.

Mohammad Shahed Karim was sentenced to life imprisonment by a Dhaka court in the case in 2020.

After the verdict, Shahed’s lawyer Shah Manjurul Haque said: “It was not a real weapon. The state was unable to prove this. The court granted his appeal and acquitted him.”

On September 28, 2020, Dhaka Senior Special Tribunal 1 Judge KM Emrul Kayesh sentenced Shahed Karim to life term imprisonment in an arms case filed over recovering a pistol from his car.

The tribunal also sentenced him to jail for seven more years as a bullet was also recovered along with the firearm.
