Faridpur-3: Supreme Court to decide on Shamim’s candidacy on January 2

The Supreme Court has fixed January 2 for a hearing on a petition filed seeking the cancellation of its chamber judge's order that allowed Awami League candidate Shamim Haque to contest the January 7 national election.

Independent candidate from Faridpur-3 AK Azad filed the petition on Thursday. Later, Appellate Division’s Chamber Judge Justice M Enayetur Rahim fixed the hearing date.

A full-member bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice Obaidul Hassan will hear the petition on that day.

On Tuesday, the chamber judge of the Appellate Division stayed a High Court order that cancelled the candidature of Awami League’s Shamim Haque for the Faridpur-3 constituency.

The court allowed him to participate in the election.

On December 15, the candidacy of Shamim Haque was cancelled by the Election Commission.

Independent candidate AK Azad had appealed against Shamim’s candidacy, citing his dual citizenship.

According to the Representation of the People Order, 1972, an election candidate cannot hold dual citizenship.

The national polls are scheduled to be held on January 7.
