A Dhaka court has placed three people, including two revenue officers, on a four-day remand again in a case filed over the missing of 55 kg gold worth over Tk45 crore from a customs office warehouse at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.
The accused remanded are Md Shahidul Islam, Saidul Islam Shahed and Md Afzal Hossain.
Mozaffar Hossain, sub-inspector of the Airport police station said: “The eight accused were produced before the court on Monday after a five-day remand. The investigating officer then sought a five-day remand of Md Shahidul Islam, Saidul Islam Shahed and Md Afzal Hossain.”
“After the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shanta Akter placed the three on a four-day remand and sent them to jail,” he added.
On the other hand, he requested to keep the remaining five accused in jail.
Earlier, they were produced before the court. The investigating officer of the case then sought a 10-day remand for a fair investigation into the case. After the hearing, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Mehedi Hasan remanded them for five days each.
The five accused who were remanded before are Akram Sheikh, 36, and Masum Rana, 33, Md Mozammel Haque, 35, Niamat Hawlader, 27, Md Rezaul Karim, 36.
Dhaka Customs House Assistant Revenue Officer Mohammad Sohrab Hossain earlier filed a case over the gold stolen from the warehouse.
According to the FIR, during a regular patrol, an airport official noticed that the lock of a vault was broken, and immediately notified his seniors around 9pm on Saturday.
On receiving the information, senior officials visited the spot and identified that a part of the vault had been broken into with a sharp object.
The customs officials later identified that around 55.51 kilograms of gold, seized in different drives from 2020-2023, was missing.
The customs house, formed a five-member probe body led by a joint commissioner to investigate the incident.
