47 citizens want to argue at SC in favour of Jamaat registration

Forty-seven supporters of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami have sought permission from the Supreme Court (SC) to place arguments before it in favour of the party's long appeal against a High Court verdict that scrapped its registration with the Election Commission.

They applied to the Appellate Division on Tuesday, seeking its permission to become a party with the leave to appeal petition for placing their arguments through lawyers.

A member of the lawyers’ panel representing the Jamaat, Advocate Matiur Rahman Akand, confirmed the matter to journalists.

The 47 applicants include the Jamaat's former lawmakers Dr Syed Abdullah Md Taher, Hamidur Rahman Azad and Hafeza Asma Khatun, former Manarat University vice chancellor M Umar Ali, Prof Abdur Rab of Dhaka University and three Freedom Fighters, according to Akand.

Earlier, 42 eminent citizens from different professions applied with the SC on July 27, seeking its permission to place arguments before it against the Jamaat in connection with a pending contempt of court petition

They applied to the Appellate Division through senior lawyer Tania Amir.

On June 26, the contempt of court petition was filed by Rezaul Haque Chandpuri, secretary general of Bangladesh Tariqat Federation, and two others against five Jamaat leaders, including its Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman, for holding public meetings as a political party despite its leave to appeal against the cancellation of its registration with the EC.
