10 accused remanded for two days over Pirganj attack

A Rangpur court on Thursday placed 10 accused including two members of Islami Chhatra Shibir on a two-day remand for each in a case filed over the arson attacks in Pirganj upazila.

Pirganj police station Sub-Inspector (SI) Mahbub Rahman produced them before the court with a seven-day remand plea.

After a hearing, Senior Judicial Magistrate Elahi Khan granted remand for two days each.

The two Chhatra Shibir men are Mamun Mondol and Omor Farukh Sonet.

Meanwhile, another 12 accused in the case were sent to jail after completion of their three-day remand. None of them gave a confessional statement.

So far, three cases have been filed under the Digital Security Act and another case over the assault, vandalism and arson attack on homes, shops and temples belonging to members of the Hindu community. 

Police have arrested 71 people till now in these four cases. 

Fifty of the arrested were remanded for three days in two phases earlier.

On the night of October 17, establishments belonging to members of the Hindu community were set on fire by a mob at Boro Karimpur village in Pirganj. Around 30 locals were injured at the time.

The attack took place after communal violence spread to some 20 districts in recent weeks, triggered by allegations that the Holy Quran was desecrated at a Hindu temple during Durga Puja in Comilla.
