A Gazpir court has sent a police sub-inspector (SI) to jail, rejecting his bail plea in a case filed for demanding dowry from his wife.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Farzana Farukh passed the order on Sunday.
SI Safiqul Islam Sarkar, 44, works at Moulvibazar district’s Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI).
His wife Nurun Nahar Sultana, 39, hailing from Pachua village in Kapasia upazila of Gazipur, filed the case in Gazipur court on December 14, 2020, said her lawyer Tofazzal Hossain.
The couple got married in 2001 and has two offspring-- a daughter and a son.
Safiqul had been demanding dowry from his wife for the last three years for building a house, according to the case statement.
After a dispute between them over demanding dowry, Nahar filed the case. Later, Safiqul forced her to withdraw the case in the name of compromise.
However, after the case was withdrawn, Safiqul started to press her again for dowry, according to the case documents.
Then she filed a case again in the court on July 18 this year, said her lawyer.
The court issued an arrest warrant against the accused of not appearing before it on the scheduled date.
When the accused appeared before the court on Sunday, the court rejected his bail application and sent him to jail.
Despite having a wife and children, her husband got married for the second time in January without letting her know, said the plaintiff.
