A Khulna court has awarded the death penalty to a man for burning his wife to death.
On Sunday, the district and sessions judge delivered its verdict over the 2020 killing with the convict Rafique Sheikh at the dock, said prosecutor Enamul Haque.
The court also fined the convict by Tk50,000, failing to pay which will result in a year in jail. On a separate count, the court sentenced Rafique to seven years in jail and slapped a fine of Tk25,000.
According to the case document, victim Mariam and Rafique got married in 2017.
On August 12, 2020, Rafique became suspicious after discovering Marium was not at home. Rafique then went out to buy petrol and bricks, planning to murder the victim.
At 10pm that day, he hit Mariam with a brick, then put her body inside a sack after making sure she died and set it on fire later.
On August 14, Mariam’s body was found at the Rupsha upazila.
The victim's mother filed a case against Rafique and four other unidentified individuals at Rupsha police station.
