CEC, Chittagong DC, 4 others face contempt rule

The High Court has issued contempt of court rule against Chief Election Commissioner AKM Nurul Huda and five others for declaring election results of a union parishad in Chittagong defying its order.

The other officials facing the rule include the EC secretary, deputy commissioner of Chittagong and the returning officer of the center.

After hearing a petition on Sunday, the bench of Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman also wanted to know why punitive action should not be taken against the respondents.

Barrister ABM Altaf Hossain argued for the petitioner.

Earlier, a general member candidate of Kumra UP in Rangunia, Kabir Ahmed, challenged the election results as he was defeated by a margin of eight votes, demanding re-election. But since the EC did not resolve the appeal, he moved the High Court seeking a stay order.

After a hearing, the court issued a bar on declaring election results. But the EC announced the winners publishing a gazette notification in this regard.

Kabir Ahmed then filed another petition seeking contempt of court rule on the respondents.
