DU student assault: Court fixes new report submission date in case against Proloy Gang

A Dhaka court on Tuesday fixed July 31 as the date for submitting the investigation report regarding the case of the “Proloy Gang” beating a student of Dhaka University (DU) on the campus.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Asaduzzaman Noor fixed the new date as the investigating officer of the case did not submit the report on Tuesday.

Sadia Afroz Khan, the mother of the victim student Jubair Ibn Humayun, filed a case against 10 members of the Proloy Gang of Dhaka University and six to seven unidentified people at the Shahbagh police station on March 26 on charges of assault with intent to kill.

Gang members Sakib Ferdous and Naimur Rahman alias Durjoy have already been arrested in the case.

The complaint stated that on the night of March 25, the accused beat Jubair with stamps, rods, belts and sticks. He suffered severe head and eye injuries and ligament tear in his right leg.

His friends also got beaten while trying to protect him. Intimidation including death threats is shown in the case file. The accused left the spot when Jubair lost consciousness from the beating. Later, he was taken by his friends to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Recently, a notorious group of students named the “Proloy Gang” has been exposed on the Dhaka University campus. Its members are allegedly involved in drug abuse, extortion, and assaulting outsiders on the campus, especially at the Suhrawardy Udyan and Shaheed Minar areas at night.
