3 get 4 months in jail over attempt to murder Jamuna TV journos

A Dhaka court sentenced three people to four months in jail in a case filed over an attempt to murder Jamuna Television senior reporter Shakil Hasan and camera person Shahin Alam in November 2016.

Besides, the court acquitted the other three accused as the charges were not proved against them.

At the same time, the court granted bail to the convicted accused on the condition of appeal.

The convicted people are three brothers Abdur Rahim, Jabbar and Zakir Hossain. 

The acquitted people are Shaon Howlader, Abhi and Habibur Rahman.

The court of Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Rezaul Karim Chowdhury announced the verdict with the presence of the convicted people.

Additional Public Prosecutor Shahjahan Majumdar (Ferdous), the lawyer of the state side of the concerned court, confirmed the information.

Meanwhile, the plaintiff Shakil Hasan said: "We expected the highest punishment for the accused. We will appeal against the verdict.”

Plaintiff's lawyer Eklas Uddin Bhuiyan said: “we have been able to prove the case with evidence and documents. But I expected exemplary punishment. If that happened as we expected, it would have played a groundbreaking role in stopping attacks on journalists. I will appeal to increase the sentence.”

Reportedly, on November 6, 2016, senior reporter Shakil Hasan and cameraman Shahin Alam of Jamuna TV were attacked while covering the illegal polythene bag manufacturing factory at Debidas Lane in the capital. Shakil was doused in kerosene by the attackers who tried to set him on fire as they fled the attack by hiding in a grocery store. 

In this incident, Shakil Hasan filed a case of attempted murder in Chawkbazar police station as a plaintiff.

Then on June 6, 2017, Moradul Islam, police inspector of Chawkbazar thana filed a charge sheet accusing eight people.

Then on January 4, 2018, the court acquitted the accused Jahangir Alam and Elias Hossain and formed a complaint against six people. 

Twelve people testified in court during the trial in the case.
