A Jhenaidah tribunal on Monday sentenced three people to death for violating a schoolgirl in 2019.
The convicts are—Badsha Mia, son of Mantej Ali, Ruhul Amin, son of Mantu Mia and Manu Mia, son of Zafaruddin of Jhenaidah municipality area.
Judge of the Jhenaidah Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Mizanur Rahman handed down the sentence.
According to the prosecution, a class VII student of Khajura village in Sadar upazila of Jhenaidah district, was abducted in her sleep from home on August 12, 2019 by the convicted Badsha Mia, and taken to a mango orchard.
Later, Badshah along with Ruhul Amin and Manu Mia violated the girl in turns and confined her in a room at Tamanna Park. They released her after midnight.
A complaint was lodged with police in connection with the crime on August 13, 2019. Police registered a case later.
Police also submitted a chargesheet against three people.
After examining records and witnesses, Jhenaidah Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge handed down the verdict and fined Tk1 lakh each.
There is a provision in the law for death sentences to be handed down in cases of abduction followed by rape - as was the case here.
As with all lower court pronouncements of the death sentence, however, the death references for the three convicts will now have to reach the High Court for review.
