Third gender community leader lands in jail for selling 20 govt-gifted houses

A Thakurgaon court on Monday sent a third gender community leader of Nargun union of Thakurgaon Sadar upazila in a case filed in connection with selling 20 tin-shed houses gifted by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to a cluster village.

The accused is Rubel, also known as ‘Guru Ma' Ruby Begum.

The court passed the order after police produced him before the court on Monday.

Nargun Union land office Assistant Sub-Registrar Hasan Ali filed the case as plaintiff, confirmed Thakurgaon Sadar police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Kamal Hossain.

Rubel was arrested on Sunday morning, the OC said.

Nargun Union Parishad Chairman Md Sharaqul Islam said the government built those tin-shed houses for 30 members of the community in the west Nargun sugarcane farm area. Later, they were given semi-pucca houses under the Ashrayan project.

“The tin-shed houses remained vacant and suddenly disappeared,” he said.

Thakurgaon Sadar upazila Executive Magistrate Abu Taher Md Samsujjaman said selling government houses is a criminal offence.

“A three-member investigation team led by Assistant Land Commissioner Tanzila Tasnim has been formed in this regard,” he added.
