Appellate Division orders Wasa not to increase water prices again

The Appellate Division Chamber Judge on Wednesday ordered that Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (Wasa) cannot increase the price of water again.

At the same time, the chamber judge upheld the High Court's ruling that the decision to give performance bonuses to employees of Wasa in 2020-2021 was illegal.

Justice M Enayetur Rahim passed the order after hearing an appeal by Wasa seeking a stay of the High Court order regarding the matter.

Attorney General AM Amin Uddin was present in the court hearing on behalf of Wasa. He was accompanied by Barrister AM Masum and Mahsib Hossain.

On the other hand, Dr M Shamsul Alam and Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua were in favor of the writ.

On August 16, the High Court had issued a stay on the decision to give performance bonus to its employees, equal to three and a half basic salaries each.

The court on that day had issued the rule, asking authorities concerned to explain as to why it shall not declare illegal the decision, which is against the provisions of the Dhaka Wasa Act.
