Absconding Rohingya woman gets life sentence in drugs case

A Chittagong court on Sunday sentenced a Rohingya woman, who is currently on the run, to life imprisonment for possessing 6,000 pieces of yaba in 2018.

The convict Mosammat Noor Taj, 28, is the wife of Md Idris, who lives in the Balukhali 19 No Rohingya Camp under Cox's Bazar's Ukhiya police station.

Chittagong 4th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Shariful Alam Bhunya passed the judgement. Meanwhile, Additional Public Prosecutor Abu Zafar said that the accused was not present in court during the verdict.

The punishment of the convicts will be effective from the day of her surrender or arrest.

According to the case documents, on December 28, 2018, the Narcotics Control Department arrested Noor Taj and a child from a bus in front of the Mir filling station of the Baklia police station of the port city.

At the time, 6,000 pieces of yaba was recovered from Noor Taj and 4,000 pieces of yaba was recovered from the child.

Tapan Kanti Sharma, the then-inspector of the Narcotics Control Department, filed a complaint at Bakalia police station as the plaintiff in this incident.

On February 7, 2019, the chargesheet in the case was filed. As there is a minor on the charge sheet, the child is being prosecuted in the juvenile's court.

Noor Taj, the accused, was charged in court on January 5, 2022. Later, the court recognized the testimony of five witnesses in this case.

Bench Assistant Omar Fawad said the court sentenced life imprisonment to the Rohingya woman, a fine of Tk10,000 and an additional year in jail in default of payment since the allegations in the narcotics case were proved. Noor Taj has been released on bail and is currently on the run.
