O level student rape, murder: HC denies Dihan's bail

The High Court denied bail to Fardin Iftekhar Dihan, the accused in the case of rape and murder of an O level student in Kalabagan area of Dhaka.

The High Court bench comprising of Justice SM Emdadul Haque and Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajol passed the verdict on Wednesday rejecting the bail appeal of the accused.

During the bail hearing, the court said that Dihan has been accused of a heinous crime. Because of this, there is no scope for considering his bail.

Later, Deputy Attorney General Sujit Chatterjee said the trial court had rejected Dihan's bail plea. He appealed to the High Court against this. On Wednesday, the High Court rejected his bail application. At the same time, the court asked to finish the trial of the case quickly.

On January 7, 2021, the law enforcers recovered the body of the 17-year-old victim from a city hospital and arrested the accused Fardin Iftekhar Dihan and three others in this connection.

Later, the victim's father lodged the case against Dihan on the night of the incident.

On January 9, law enforcers released three others after interrogation over the matter. 

The victim had gone to a friend's house in Kalabagan for group study, her family said.

Dihan, who is believed to have raped and killed her at his family flat in Kalabagan area, gave a confessional statement before a Dhaka court.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mamunur Rashid recorded the statement and sent him to jail pending a hearing.

Meanwhile, doctors found evidence of rape after an autopsy on the victim.
