Writ filed seeking division for Fakhrul, Abbas

A writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking division in jail for BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas.

Rahat Ara Begum, wife of Fakhrul, and Afroza Abbas, wife of Mirza Abbas, submitted the petition to the bench of Justice KM Kamrul Kader and Justice Mohammad Ali, said Advocate Gazi Kamrul Islam Sajal, general secretary of lawyer forum of Supreme Court Unit.

Raising the petition for hearing on Tuesday, advocate AJ Mohammad Ali said: “This is a very urgent matter. Two former ministers have not been given division in jail.”

Later, the bench scheduled the hearing on the petition at 3pm on Tuesday.

On Monday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shafiuddin rejected the bail petition of 224 leaders and activists of BNP, including Mirza Fakhrul and Mirza Abbas, in a case over the clash between police and the party activists in the capital that left one dead and around 20 others injured on December 7.

A DB team picked up the two senior BNP leaders from their homes at around 3am on Friday.

The police had brought them to the DB headquarters to question them about the clash on December 7 between BNP men and law enforcers.

Later, they were shown arrested in a case filed over planning and inciting an attack on policemen at Naya Paltan on December 7.
