Derogatory remarks on PM Hasina: High Court grants bail to Smriti

The High Court on Monday granted bail to Sonia Akhter Smriti, who was arrested for spreading rumours about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on social media.

A High Court bench of Justice Md Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice Shahed Nuruddin passed the order after hearing of a bail petition.

Barrister Kaisar Kamal stood for the petitioner.

Earlier on October 4, the law enforcement agency arrested Sonia Akhter Smriti from her home in Beradanga under Rajbari district.

Later, she was sent to jail through a Rajbari court.

Sonia Akhter Smriti is the founder of the voluntary organization Rajbari Blood Donors Club.

Police said science and technology affairs secretary of the ruling Awami League's Mijanpur union unit, filed a case against Smriti at Rajbari Sadar police station. 

According to the case statement, Smriti made false and defamatory statements on social media on August 31 to tarnish the prime minister's reputation. Smriti went live on Facebook before her arrest and was heard talking to policemen.
