A Dhaka court on Thursday extended the bail of former Jubo League leader Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat until November 8 in a graft case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in 2019.
Judge Md Akhtaruzzaman of the Dhaka Special Judge Court-5 passed the order accepting a petition submitted by Samrat’s lawyer seeking an extension of his bail.
The same day was fixed for the charge framing hearing in the case.
His lawyer Afroza Shahnaz Parveen Hira applied to extend the bail period. The judge granted the application and prolonged the bail after the hearing.
The expelled president of Dhaka Metropolitan South Jubo League, Samrat, was present in the court during the hearing, sources related to the court confirmed.
Earlier, the court on May 24 sent Samrat to jail when he surrendered before the court and his lawyer Afroza Shahnaz Parveen Hira filed for a bail petition.
On May 18, High Court cancelled the bail granted to Samrat in the graft case. The court also asked Samrat to surrender before a lower court within seven days.
Earlier, On May 11, the Dhaka court granted bail to Samrat in the graft case, paving the way for his release from judicial custody.
Judge Al Asad Md Asifuzzaman of Dhaka’s sixth Special Judge Court passed the order but with conditions — Samrat cannot leave the country without the permission of the court, has to submit his passport, and also his health reports on the designated date.
Earlier, the same court turned down his bail plea in the corruption case filed by the ACC twice, on April 28 and April 13.
Samrat secured bail in a drugs case on April 11 and in an arms case and a money laundering case on April 10.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on November 12, 2019, filed the case against Samrat for amassing illegal wealth of Taka2.94 crore.
The anti-graft body filed a charge-sheet on November 26, 2020, and on March 22, 2022, the court took the charge-sheet into cognizance.
Earlier on October 7, 2019, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-1 filed two cases under arms and narcotics acts against Samrat with Ramna Police Station, making former Dhaka South unit Jubo League vice-president Enamul Haque Arman co-accused in the narcotics case.
