Justice Jahangir: Law at times doesn’t stand by the poor

Supreme Court Legal Aid Committee Chairman Justice Jahangir Hossain on Thursday said law in many cases doesn’t stand on the side of the poor as they don’t have money and can’t afford to hire good lawyers.

“Law moves faster for the rich as they have the money. They can afford good lawyers. They can spend hefty amount for the lawyers. So, law moves faster for them and that is the reality,” he said.

“On the other hand, law in many cases doesn’t stand on the side of the poor. They cannot afford hiring good lawyers and cannot present their arguments that well. For these, the government has established National Legal Aid Services Organization for providing legal assistance to the poor,” he added.

Justice Jahangir Hossain, also a judge of the High Court Division, said this while addressing as chief guest a seminar titled “Legal Aid in Bangladesh: Serve Humanity and Save Society” in the capital. Organized by Lions Club International District-315, the seminar was also attended by Justice ANM Bashir Ullah.

Tejgaon College Vice-Principal Prof Anjuman Ara presented a key-note paper at the seminar, which was also addressed by District Judge Farah Mamun, Assistant Attorney Generals Farzana Shampa and Tamanna Ferdous, Lion Md Abdul Wahab, Lion Jalal Ahmed, Lion Md Hanif and Advocate Abdur Rahman, among others.
