The High Court on Wednesday issued a rule asking authorities concerned to explain as to why it shall not pass order to give Tk1,0,00,000 to each of the families of five people killed after a girder of the Bus Rapid Transit project fell from a crane on their car in Dhaka's Uttara area.
A High Court division bench comprising Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Ahmed Sohel passed the order after holding a hearing on a writ petition filed in this regard.
The High Court in its rule also asked as to why the “inaction” of the respondents in stopping such accidents shall not be declared illegal.
It was also directed to submit a report within two months on the steps taken by the Bus Rapid Transit project in the last five years for public safety while constructing the infrastructure.
Supreme Court lawyer Shahjahan Akond Masum filed and moved the writ on Wednesday on behalf of Advocate Zakaria Khan.
As many as five officials including Road, Transport and Bridges Secretary and Bus Rapid Transit Project Chairman were made respondents in the writ.
Another lawyer of the Supreme Court Advocate Sagufta Ahmed filed a separate writ petition over the matter.
Earlier on Monday, five people, including two children, died as a girder of the Bus Rapid Transit project fell from a crane on their car in Dhaka's Uttara area.
