Case filed against two police officers in Sunamganj over police brutality

A case has been filed against two officials in connection with the death of a man allegedly caused by police torture in Sunamganj.

The accused in the case are former (withdrawn) Sub-Inspector (SI) Debashish Sutradhar and Sub-Inspector (SI) Alauddin of Shantiganj police station.

Dalim Mia, brother of the deceased, filed the case in the court of District and Sessions Judge Wahiduzzaman Sikder on Monday afternoon.

Rabiul Lais Rokesh, president of Sunamganj District Bar Association and a lawyer for the plaintiffs said the court had set Wednesday for the delivery of the verdict.

Earlier on February 9, then former SI Debashish of Shantiganj Police Station detained Wazir from his house on suspicion of theft.

SI Pradhan Kumar Singh and ASI Akhtaruzzaman were present at the time.

After getting bail from the court on February 10, Wazir Mia returned home. He underwent treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.

On February 21, he fell seriously ill and was taken to a local hospital in Kaitak, where he was pronounced dead.

On the same day, Wazir’s relatives and locals, carrying his body, blocked the Sunamganj-Sylhet Pagla Bazar area, claiming that Wazir had died from police torture.

The blockade was lifted after Additional District Magistrate Anwarul Halim, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Abu Saeed, and Shantiganj Upazila Parishad Chairman Faruk Ahmed assured the crowd that the police officials would be brought to justice.

Later, the district administration formed a three-member inquiry committee headed by Additional District Magistrate Anwarul Halim.

SI Debashish was transferred from Shantiganj police station to Dirai police station of the district on the same day.

On Saturday SI Debasish was closed and attached to Sunamganj Police Lines.

Meanwhile, another inquiry committee headed by Additional DIG Biplob Vijay Talukder of Sylhet range was formed on Monday.
