Narayanganj launch capsize: Court orders review of chargesheet

A Narayanganj court has ordered a review of charges filed against three people over the deaths of 34 people in a launch capsize in Shitalakkhya river last year.

On Thursday, Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Nusrat Jahan Bithi gave the order after turning down the chargesheet filed by investigators.

The court has scheduled March 23 for the next hearing, said Inspector Asaduzzaman of Narayanganj court police.

On December 9, Narayanganj Sadar Naval Police Sub-Inspector (SI) Mohammad Yunus Munshi filed the chargesheet in the cognizance court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Badiuzzaman 

According to the chargesheet, SKL-3 cargo operator Ohiduzzaman, 50, Sukani Anwar Mallick, 40, and engine operator Md Majnu Mollah, 38, were charged.

On April 6 last year, the bodies of 34 people were recovered from the Shitalakkhya river after a launch capsized after a cargo vessel hit it in Narayanganj. 

Acting Deputy Director of BIWTA’s maritime security department Babu Lal Vaidya filed a case with the police blaming the erratic driving of the cargo vessel SKL-3 that collided with the launch.

Fourteen people were arrested in connection with the incident.
