Court frames charges against cricketer Nasir, wife Tamima

A Dhaka court has framed charges against Bangladesh national team cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife Tamima in a case filed over their “illegal marriage”.

Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Tofazzal Hossain read out the charges on Wednesday.

The court also discharged another accused, Tamima's mother Sumi Akter.

Earlier, on January 24, defence lawyer Kazi Nazibullah told the court that the marriage between Nasir and Tamima was solemnized following the rules of Muslim Law.

“Tamima duly divorced Rakib before she got married to Nasir. It is under the jurisdiction of the local marriage registrar office to implement it. So the charges brought against them should be dismissed,” the lawyer added.

Complainant’s lawyer Ishrat Hasan opposed, saying that Rakib did not get any notice regarding divorce as it was not duly served. So the charges brought against the accused should be dismissed, he added.

On September 30 last year, a report of the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) said the marriage between Nasir Hossain and Tamima Sultana is illegal as she is still the wife of businessman Rakib Hasan.

Nasir and Tamima were granted bail by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohamad Jashim on October 31.
