A Comilla court on Wednesday sentenced a father to life imprisonment for raping his daughter in Comilla's Debidwar upazila in 2017.
Convict Jamshed Alam, 45, of Baniapara village of the upazila, was also fined Tk1 lakh. He will have one more year of imprisonment in case of non-payment of the fine.
Comilla Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal Judge Jahedul Kabir passed the order.
Special PP Mizanur Rahman Majumder, the lawyer in the case, said Jamshed had raped his own daughter on July 24, 2017.
Two days after the incident, the victim’s mother Halima Begum filed a case with Debidwar police station.
The court appointed a new investigating officer in the case while the girl underwent a medical examination. The examination revealed various signs of rape.
After a long hearing, the court delivered the verdict in the presence of the accused in the afternoon.
Halima Begum said her husband had raped her daughter several times. “An arbitration meeting was held on this. However, Jamshed did not stop, which forced me to file the case.”
Meanwhile, after hearing the verdict, Halima Begum said: "I wanted his death sentence. A father like him has no right to survive.”
