Petition filed against Mayor Taposh for contempt of court

A petition alleging contempt of court has been filed against Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), for his remarks regarding the removal of a chief justice.

On Sunday, Lawyer Shah Ahmed Badol filed the petition with the relevant section of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.

In the plea, the lawyer identified himself as the member secretary of the ad hoc committee of the Supreme Court (SC) Lawyers' Association.

On May 24, a national daily's report containing Taposh's remarks was presented before a three-member Appellate Division headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique. Senior lawyer M Amir Ul Islam read the report, which included Taposh's address at an event in Dhaka on May 21.

As no immediate action was taken, the petition was lodged, requesting the court to issue a show cause notice to the mayor and summon him for a hearing, as per media reports.

The hearing on the petition is scheduled to take place on Monday in the chamber court of the Appellate Division.
