Allegations of looting and tearing of ballot papers were raised on the eve of the Supreme Court Bar Association election to be held on Wednesday and Thursday.
The incident reportedly happened at 8:30pm on Tuesday.
According to some lawyers present at the time, Mansurul Haque Chowdhury resigned as the head of the election management committee the day before the election.
The candidates of the two major political parties – Awami League and BNP – met on the second floor of the association building to discuss the nomination of the new chief of the committee.
However, as the matter was not resolved through discussion, ASM Moktar Kabir, former vice president of the association, was announced as the convener by the BNP.
On the other hand, the Awami League named Md Maniruzzaman as the committee head.
When the Awami League-nominated chief went to complete the paperwork, an altercation ensued between the two sides.
At one point, Blue Party (BNP) supporters started rioting and tore up the nomination papers.
The two sides chased each other in turns.
Later, at around 10pm, the situation became somewhat normal when law enforcement arrived there.
Numerous yellow and red ballot papers were scattered on the first and second floors of the building. Most of these were torn or twisted.
No lawyer candidate from either side agreed to speak directly to the media.
The election subcommittee was still preparing for the election on Wednesday at the time of writing.
