HC: Vested group delaying Mitu murder case

The High Court on Tuesday said that a vested group was trying to create obstructions in the trial of Mahmuda Khanam Mitu murder.

The victim was the wife of former SP Babul Akter, now in jail in the case he had filed over the much-talked murder.

The bench of Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Shahed Nuruddin came with the observation during a hearing, Bangla Tribune reported.

Lawyer Mohammad Shishir Monir argued for the petition seeking directives to quiz the two minor children of the couple carefully.

The court said: “A vested interest group is trying to delay the judicial process in the murder case. Doesn’t her family have the right to get justice? Won’t you let justice be served? Doesn’t a dead person have the right to get justice?”

On June 5, 2016, unidentified assailants gunned down Mitu at the port city's GEC intersection while she was going to drop her son at school. Soon after the incident, Babul filed a murder case at Panchlaish police station against three unidentified men.

Babul has been behind bars since May last year in the case filed by Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossain.

In January, Babul was formally shown arrested in his own case after the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) pleaded to court seeking permission.
