Mitu Murder: Court grants examination of Babul Akter's handwriting

A Chittagong court has granted permission to the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to examine former superintendent of police (SP) Babul Akter’s handwriting in the murder case of his wife Mahmuda Khanam Mitu.

Chittagong Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Abdul Halim issued the order on Tuesday in presence of Babul Akhter.

The investigating officer of the case had applied to the court for a handwriting test of Babul, said Babul’s lawyer AKM Azharul Haque.

The handwriting samples were collected in the presence of the PBI personnel. They will be tested in a lab by the investigating officer of the case.

Babul has been behind bars since May last year in the case filed by Mitu's father Mosharraf Hossain.

On June 5, 2016, unidentified assailants gunned down Mitu at the port city's GEC intersection while she was going to drop her son to school.

Soon after the incident, Babul filed a murder case at Panchlaish police station against three unidentified men.

Later, Chittagong metropolitan police arrested four men, including Abu Nasur Gunu, Shah Zaman alias Robin, Md Anwar and Md Motaleb Mia alias Wasim, from different places in connection with the murder.

Of them, Anwar and Wasim gave confessional statements before a magistrate, implicating seven people, including Musa who directly took part in the killing, Mohammad Rashed and Nabi.

During the course of the probe, police also arrested "arms supplier" Ehteshamul Haque Bhola and his assistant Md Monir and seized a pistol from their possession.

Police also arrested Musa's elder brother Saidul Shikder Shakur and Shahjahan for supplying the motorbike that was used in the murder.

However, on July 4, 2016, Nabi and Rashed were killed in a gunfight with police in Rangunia.
