War crimes verdict against ex-Jamaat MP on Thursday

The verdict in a case of crimes against humanity against Satkhira district Jamaat-e-Islami chief and former lawmaker Abdul Khaleq Mandal alias Jallad Khaleq will be pronounced on Thursday.

Three other accused in the case are Abdullah-hil Baki and Zahirul Islam Tekka Khan – both died during the trial, and Khan Roknuzzaman, who has remained absconding.

A three-member judicial panel of the International Crimes Tribunal led by Justice Md Shahinur Islam set the date on Tuesday.

Earlier, the tribunal kept the case for verdict (CAV) on November 11, 2021 after hearing closing arguments in the case.

The accused have been charged with seven counts of crimes against humanity, including murder, rape, detention and torture. Although seven charges were brought against the accused, six charges were presented before the tribunal.

Rezia Sultana Chaman was the prosecutor in the tribunal, who pleaded for maximum punishment of the accused.

Abdus Sobhan Tarafdar and Mujahidul Islam Shaheen stood for the accused Khaleq Mandal. While Gazi MH Tamim, being appointed by the state, stood for the fugitive accused.

Charges were framed against the accused on March 5, 2018. Earlier, a formal complaint was lodged in the case on March 19, 2017.
