High Court committee to control defamatory contents on social media

The High Court on Thursday formed a committee to control defamatory contents spreading on social media platforms.

In response to a writ petition filed by Desh Television Managing Director Arif Hossain, the court ordered the committee to submit a report with necessary recommendations on the matter in 30 days.

The bench of Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman came up with the order.

Members of the committee are secretaries of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication, Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division of the Law Ministry, Information and Broadcasting Ministry, Internal Resources Division of the Finance Ministry, and the Foreign Ministry; chairman of the Bangladesh Telecommunication and Regulatory Commission; chairman of the Board of Revenue; Bangladesh Bank governor; chairman of Bangladesh Press Council and representatives from private television channels.

The court also issued a rule asking the respondents to explain as to why their failure to control derogatory contents on social media should not be declared illegal.
