High Court orders probe over freedom fighter’s burial without state honours

The High Court has ordered an inquiry over the burial of a freedom fighter without state honours in Khishoreganj.

The bench of Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir gave the orders after hearing a writ over the matter.

The court has ordered the secretaries to the Liberation War affairs ministry and public administration ministry as well as Jatiyo Muktijoddha Council (Jamuka) to probe the matter.

They have also been asked to investigate whether the upazila administration chief (UNO) is responsible for the incident.

Abdul Motaleb Shikder, a freedom fighter, died on January 28 in Kishoreganj’s Bajitpur upazila. While the police were there, the UNO’s absence meant he had to be buried without the state honours.

On February 8, the High Court issued a rule asking why it should not order an inquiry into the matter after a petition was filed seeking that the guard of honour be bestowed upon Shikder’s grave in Kishoreganj’s Bajitpur upazila.
