Detained 'ARSA' chief's brother Shah Ali on 6-day remand

A Cox’s Bazar court has placed Md Shah Ali, detained brother of Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) chief, on a six-day remand for questioning. He was arrested from the Ukhia Rohingya camp in Cox's Bazar.

At noon on Thursday, the remand order was issued by Cox's Bazar Senior Judge Sreejnan Thanchangar.

Police Inspector Chandan Kumar Das said that the law enforcers had sought remand for Shah Ali for seven days each in three cases. Later, the court granted a total of six days’ remand, in each case for two days.

Shah Ali, 55, is the brother of Ataullah Abu Amman Jummani, the head of Myanmar's banned armed group Arsa.

In the police case statement, it was mentioned that he would collect 'Bangladeshi National Identity Cards' at the address of Zainab Colony in Dewan Bazar area of Kotwali Police Station of Chittagong.

At dawn on January 16, the Armed Police Battalion (APBn) arrested Shah Ali, with weapons and drugs in his possession, from Rohingya Camp No. 6, in Kutupalong, Ukhia, Cox's Bazar.

The APBn members also rescued an abducted and blindfolded boy from the spot.

On the night of January 16, the police filed a case at Ukhia police station about two abducted teenagers. The accused were identified as Shah Ali, Mohammad Zobair and three others. Sub-inspector (SI) Md. Nur E Alam is responsible for the investigation of the case.

According to the APBn, some miscreants had reportedly taken up positions in the area and they could cause major incidents in the Rohingya camps.

Shah Ali was later arrested after a drone operation was carried out to identify his whereabouts.

At that time a person named Sadiqul was rescued. He said he had been detained and tortured for money.
