Five put on remand over gang-rape of Garo girls in Mymensingh

A Mymensingh court on Sunday placed five youths on two-day remand each in a case filed over the gang-rape of two Garo girls in Haluaghat. 

Senior Judicial Magistrate Dewan Muniruzzaman passed the order after the Detective Branch of police in Mymensingh sought a seven-day remand for them. 

The two girls were gang-raped by several youths beside in Haluaghat on December 27 when they were returning home from a wedding party in an adjacent village at night. 

The father of one of the victims sued 10 people on December 30.  

On Saturday, police arrested five people over the incident. The detainees are Sharif Mia, 22, Mizanur Rahman, 22, Mia Hossain, 20, Abdul Hamid, 19, and Rukon Mia, 21. 

Four of the arrestees have been named in the case filed over the rape while the other youth was arrested on suspicion. 

Police said they were conducting raids to arrest the other accused in the case.
