Jhalakathi launch fire: Order on 3 owners on January 19

A Dhaka court on Tuesday set January 19 for hearing on a petition to show three owners of the launch MV Obhijan 10 arrested in a case filed over the deadly fire incident in Jhalakathi.

Special Metropolitan Magistrate Joynab Begum, of Dhaka Marine Court, passed the order after the Department of Shipping submitted the prayer to the court.

The three accused are Md Hamjalal Sheikh, 55, Md Shamim Ahmed, 43, and Md Rasel Ahmed, 43.

After the hearing, the court directed jail authorities to bring before it the three owners of the launch from Dhaka jail, who were arrested under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, on January 19.

Public Prosecutor Bellal Hossain confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune. 

On Sunday, the court sent in-charge driver Md Masum Billah and second driver Abul Kalam to jail after they surrendered and sought bail in the case.

Earlier, the court issued arrest warrants against eight people, including four owners of the launch, after Md Shafiqul Islam, chief inspector of Department of Shipping, filed the case.

On December 23, a massive fire broke out in the engine room of MV Abhijan-10 launch on the Sugandha River near Jhalakathi sadar upazila where at least 46 people were killed and several injured.
