Court wants probe report in case against journalist Rozina Islam on July 15

A Dhaka court has fixed July 15 for the submission of a probe report in a case filed against Rozina Islam, senior reporter of the daily Prothom Alo.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Jasim, accepting the first information report (FIR) of the case filed by the Health Services Division with Shahbagh police station on Monday, issued the order on Tuesday.

The court has also ordered the authorities concerned to provide the journalist with necessary medical care in accordance with jail rules.

Prashant Kumar Karmakar, Ms Islam’s legal counsel, had told the court that she was suffering from various ailments and needed medical attention.

The court granted it on the basis of the appeal, Prashant was quoted by Bangla Tribune as saying.

Health Ministry officials handed Rozina Islam over to the police on Monday after confining her at the office of Saiful Islam Bhuiyan, personal secretary to Health Services Division Secretary Lokman Hossain Miah.

She was later sued under the Official Secrets Act and the Penal Code for “theft and photographing” of official documents.

On Tuesday, a Dhaka court turned down an appeal by the police to quiz Rozina Islam in custody for five days.

She was taken to Kashimpur Women's Central Jail in Gazipur from Dhaka on the same day. She will remain in detention there until the next hearing of her bail petition on Thursday.
