Five Banani rape accused indicted

A Dhaka court has framed the charges against five accused in the Banani rape case. Dhaka’s Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal 2 Judge Md Saiful Azam passed the order on Thursday. The court fixed July 24 for recording witness deposition in the case. The court also rejected both the discharge and bail petitions filed by the lawyers of the five accused.

Two female university students filed a case with Banani police on May 6, alleging that they were raped at the Raintree Hotel on the night of March 28 by Shafat Ahmed, Nayem and Sadman Sakif while Shafat’s driver Billal Hossain recorded the incident and Rahmat Ali held the victims at gun point. All of the accused have given confessional statements before the court.

Based on the confessions and police investigation, it appears that the rape was preplanned and the victims were invited to a birthday party under the pretense that there would be many guests. Investigators scrutinised the guest register of the Raintree Hotel and found that the rapists had stored liquor on March 27 night for the next night’s birthday party.
