Press Club clash: 6 BNP leaders get anticipatory bail

The High Court (HC) on Wednesday granted anticipatory bail to six BNP leaders, including Joint Secretary General Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, until April 4, in a case filed over Sunday’s clash between police and the party’s activists at the National Press Club.

The bench of Justice Md Riaz Uddin Khan and Justice Md Habibul Gani passed the order after they appeared before the court on Wednesday.

Advocate Kaysar Kamal stood for the bail petitioner.

Apart from Habib, the other BNP leaders who secured the anticipatory bail are Jubo Dal General Secretary Sultan Salauddin Tuku, Chhatra Dal President Fazlur Rahman Khokon, General Secretary Iqbal Hossain, Shecchasebak Dal General Secretary Abdul Quader Bhuiyan and Chhatra Dal Organizing Secretary Juwel Hawladar. 

The clash occurred during a rally of the BNP protesting the death of writer Mushtaq Ahmed in police custody and demanding the repeal of the Digital Security Act (DSA) in front of the press club. 

Later, police filed a case accusing dozens of BNP leaders over the matter.
