Man sentenced to life imprisonment for child rape in Cox's Bazar

A court has sentenced Mansur Alam, a 40-year-old maulvi, to life imprisonment for raping a child in Cox's Bazar. 

The court also sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for an additional year for non-payment of a Tk50,000 fine.

The accused is a resident of Hajalia village in Islamabad union of Cox’s Bazar Sadar upazila. 

Syed Mohammad Rezaur Rahman Reza, special public prosecutor of the Women and Child Repression Prevention Tribunal-2, Cox's Bazar, confirmed news of the incident and said: “On the night of July 7, 2018, the 10-year-old child fell asleep while studying the Quran alone at Dochri mosque of Ramu upazila in Eidgar union. Around 12:30 pm, Maulana Mansur Alam raped the child.” 

The child's father filed a case against Maulana Mansur Alam with Ramu police station on July 10, 2018. 

Maulvi Mansur Alam pleaded guilty under Section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure and testified before a senior judicial magistrate. The judge pronounced the verdict after the cross examination of witnesses and arguments on February 19, 2019. 

Special Public Prosecutor Syed Mohammad Rezaur Rahman Reza represented the state, while Advocate Mohammad Ibrahim stood for the criminal.
