6 members of a family sentenced to life imprisonment for murder

A court has sentenced six members of the same family to life imprisonment in the murder case of Saidar Rahman, from Alokchhatra village in Paba upazila of Rajshahi.

Rajshahi Divisional Special Judge Mosammat Ismat Ara gave the verdict in the case on Sunday afternoon.

The convicts are Dulal Uddin, his wife Minara Khatun, Md Mithu, Md Tota, Ranju and Md Bulbul. The accused are all members of the same family.

Special Public Prosecutor (PP) Shafiqul Islam Rentu confirmed the matter and said that the accused Tota and Mithu were sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Tk 50,000.

The other four accused were jailed and fined Tk 10,000. The accused were present in the during the verdict and later sent to Rajshahi Central Jail.

According to the summary of the case, the accused used a machete, a knife and other sharp weapons to murder Saidar, 30, over a land dispute around midday on July 19, 2005.

Later, Saidar’s mother Sufia Khatun filed a murder case with Paba police station. The investigating officer of the case Zakir Hossain filed a charge sheet against the accused on October 17 of the same year.

The court took the testimony of 25 people in the case. Lawyer Ekramul Haque conducted the case on behalf of the accused. Finally, the court handed down the verdict after a long 15-year trial.
