Two madrasa teachers, accused in the case filed over the vandalization of Bangabandhu’s sculpture in Kushtia, have given confessional statements under Section 164of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).
Al Amin, 27, and Yusuf Ali, 26, made the statements at the court of Kushtia Senior Judicial Magistrate Delwar Hossain on Saturday.
According to court sources, the duo taught in the Hefaz department of Ibne Masud Madrasa in the Jugia area of Kushtia. At least 17 students study in this department including the two other accused in the case -- Abu Bakkar alias Mithun, 19, Sabuj Islam alias Nahid, 20.
Two or three days before the incident Abu Bakkar and Sabuj, along with Yusuf, went to a market. On their way, they came across the sculpture of Bangabandhu at the five roads' intersection in Kushtia city.
The teachers came to know that their students, Abu Bakkar and Sabuj, were involved with the vandalization of Bangabandhu’s sculpture around 8:30am on December 5, a few hours after the incident happened.
The teachers advised the students to flee to their homes. Police later showed them the CCTV footage of the vandalism and despite knowing the two accused, the teachers refused to recognize them.

Kushtia Superintendent of Police SM Tanvir Arafat said the two accused madrasa teachers hid the whole matter without revealing the involvement of the two accused madrassa students in the vandalism of the sculpture of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
Moreover, they helped the students to escape. Police arrested all the accused and they agreed to give a confessional statement during interrogation on remand for further investigation, he added.
In the early hours of December 5, the under construction sculpture of Bangabandhu, costing Tk 30 lakh, was vandalized at the five roads' intersection in Kushtia city.
Kushtia Municipality Secretary Kamal Uddin filed a case with the Model police station in this regard. Later, on December 6, police arrested the two teachers and two students of the madrasa.
On December 8, Kushtia Senior Judicial Magistrate Enamul Haque placed the students on five-day remand while the teachers were put on four-day remand each.
The five-day remand of Abu Bakkar and Sabuj will come to an end on Sunday.
